About the artist: Theo van Doesburg

“When contemplating a work of art it is possible to perceive if it has been created according to the eye or to the spirit, in other words, if it projects three-dimensional reality or spiritual n-dimensionality.”

Theo van Doesburg

Theo van Doesburg (1883-1931) was a Dutch artist and designer who was a key figure in the development of the De Stijl art movement. Van Doesburg’s signature style is characterized by the use of geometric shapes and primary colors, which he combined to create a distinctive visual vocabulary that greatly influenced modern art and design.

His early work is in line with the Amsterdam Impressionists and influenced by Vincent van Gogh. However, after reading Wassily Kandinsky’s Rückblicke, he became strongly interested in the more spiritual level in painting that originates from the mind rather than from everyday life, and in abstraction as its logical expression.

He co-founded De Stijl with Piet Mondrian and was the leader of the movement. In 1922, he moved to Weimar to spread the influence of the movement through Walter Gropius and the Bauhaus School. During his career, Van Doesburg collaborated with Sophie Taeuber-Arp and Hans Arp, El Lissitzky and Kurt Schwitters and kept a link with the Dada movement.

According to art critic Clement Greenberg, “Van Doesburg is a key figure in the history of modern art, who pushed the boundaries of abstraction and helped to establish a new visual language.” His work has since been recognized across the globe and is considered a testament to the power of simplicity in art.

Museum curator Jennifer Mundy has noted that Van Doesburg’s art is about “the transformation of individual parts into a unified whole.” His work was designed to engage the viewer and create a sense of harmony and balance. By combining basic shapes and colors, Van Doesburg was able to create art that was both striking and accessible.

Theo van Doesburg’s art can be found in several museums and galleries across the world, such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.

Now, it can be found in your home too, translated into a refined handmade rug from your favorite Van Doesburg painting.
