About the artist: Robert Delaunay

“The idea of the vital movement of the world and its movement is simultaneity.”

Robert Delaunay

Robert Delaunay (1885-1941) was a French artist known for his contributions to the development of abstract art. His use of bold colors and geometric shapes was groundbreaking, and his art continues to be celebrated today for its vibrant energy. Delaunay’s work was recognized internationally during his lifetime, and he remains one of the most important artists of the 20th century.

According to renowned art critic Robert Hughes, “Delaunay’s art was a continuous exploration of the vitality, power, and sheer beauty of color.”

His use of color was not just aesthetic, but also served to convey a sense of movement and rhythm. His paintings have been described as “music for the eyes,” and were designed to engage the viewer on a visceral level.

Museum curator Sarah Wilson notes that Delaunay’s work “has a remarkable ability to change the energy in a room.” His use of color and form can create a sense of dynamism or calm, depending on the composition. It’s perhaps this ability to affect the environment that gives Delaunay’s art its continued relevance and popularity.

Now, it can be found in your home too, translated into a refined handmade rug from your favorite Delaunay painting.
