Description

“The experience of space is not a privilege of the gifted few, but a biological function.”

László Moholy-Nagy

Moholy-Nagy was born in Hungary on July 20th 1895. During his youth, he was strongly interested in writing and poetry. Later, during World War I, he began sketching and painting his experiences there. After leaving the military, he started studying art with Róbert Berény, one of the avant-garde artists who introduced cubism and expressionism to Hungarian art. One year later, he moved to Vienna and then Berlin.

In 1922 he met Walter Gropius, who invited Moholy-Nagy to teach at the Bauhaus School. With him, the school moved closer towards design and industrial integration, its original aims. Throughout his career, he became proficient and innovative in the fields of photography, typography, sculpture, painting, printmaking, film-making, and industrial design. He left the Bauhaus in 1928 and established his own design studio in Berlin.

After the Nazis came to power in Germany in 1933, he was no longer allowed to work there. He moved to London, where he formed part of the circle of émigré artists and intellectuals. In 1937 his artworks were included in the infamous “Degenerate art” exhibition held by Nazi Germany in Munich. That same year, on the recommendation of Walter Gropius, Moholy-Nagy moved to Chicago to become the director of the New Bauhaus. In 1939 Moholy-Nagy opened the School of Design in Chicago.

László Moholy-Nagy painted Typo Collage in 1922, when he had just started teaching at Bauhaus.
