Confirm where the rug will live (for example living room, bedroom, hallway, dining room) and whether it is for private or hospitality use.
Assess traffic and practical demands
Estimate how much daily use the rug will receive and whether it must resist frequent walking, furniture pressure, and movement. For heavy commercial or constant high-traffic areas, we typically advise alternatives based on the specific space.
Choose the technique based on design detail
Select handknotted for maximum detail and longevity, handtufted for curves and soft, plush surfaces, or flatweave for graphic designs and lightweight structure.
Select materials to match performance and look
Use New Zealand wool as the resilient all-round option. Choose linen for a natural, refined look, Tencel for a silky plant-based sheen, pure silk for an exclusive, elegant finish, and mohair for exceptional softness and rich texture.
Align pile and finishing with the design
Confirm pile type (cut, loop, or cut + loop) and pile height. Handknotted rugs are typically around 10 mm and handtufted around 20 mm, with further options available. Add carving for crisp definition or sculpting for relief, and choose shaping and fringes based on the desired edge finish.
Confirm budget and lead time, then finalize
Confirm budget and timeline early to select the best technique for the project. Typical lead times are 10–14 weeks for handknotted, 6–12 weeks for handtufted, and 6–8 weeks for flatweave, depending on size, colors, and complexity.
